A surgical team prepares the patient by making several dime-sized incisions in the body. The team equips four robotic arms with tiny surgical tools and a camera and wheels it into place over the operating table.
The surgeon sits nearby at a console, watching a monitor with a magnified, three-dimensional view inside the body. The surgeon uses hand and foot controls to direct the robotic arms. The system translates the surgeon’s maneuvers into real time – twisting, turning and rotating the micro-instruments as the operation demands. Though often called a robot, the technology cannot be programmed or move on its own.
Operating Room Layout
In this clip, you will see an overview of the operating room’s configuration and how the surgeon performs the robotic surgery.
Paper Airplane Demo
In this clip, you will see how Ricardo Estape, M.D., uses the precision of the robot to create a paper airplane the size of a penny.
Drawing of tiny pineapple demo
In this clip, you will witness how Ricardo Estape, M.D., uses the robot to draw a miniature pineapple.
In this video, watch as Ricardo Estape, M.D., draws a miniature pineapple – the symbol of Baptist Health South Florida – on the tiny head of a thumbtack.
